How to Gift an NFT for Christmas

Alex Lielacher

If you want to stand out this Christmas and give a unique present, why not give an NFT?

It’s that time of the year again, where we get to show some love to our family members and friends by gifting them with something special. Typically, Christmas gifts are physical, but with the progression of technology, you can gift them something digital, like an NFT.

Read on to learn how you can gift your loved one(s) NFTs this Christmas.

A JPEG for Christmas? Santa Approves!

There’s arguably no Christmas gift that’s more “2021” than a non-fungible token (NFT).

The last twelve months saw an explosion in the NFT market, with crypto art emerging as a new asset class that is carving out its niche in the global art market.

So, why not gift someone a cool piece of crypto art combined with an explanation of what NFTs are, how they work, and why they have the potential to become a disruptive technology that can empower artists, creators, and brands?

Choosing An NFT to Gift

When picking what NFT to gift to a friend or family member, there are a few essential things to consider.

Firstly, what kind of NFT would your recipient like?

If they are a cat person, maybe a CryptoKitty could do the trick. If they are into contemporary art, perhaps some experimental digital artwork that they could print out, frame, and hang on their wallet. Or if they are into gaming, perhaps a handful of Gods Unchained cards that they could then use to play the game.

To make sure the gift is personalized and shows you thought about it, make sure you choose an NFT that suits the recipient.

Next, **think about how much you want to spend? **

How much money have you put aside for the gift? NFTs have varying values depending on factors such as their rarity, the artist that has created them, and the hype created around a drop.

What’s more, you need to consider transaction fees. If you are planning to gift an NFT worth around $25, you will have to look at NFT marketplaces on chains beyond Ethereum since ETH gas fees may set you back more than the NFT itself. This leads us to the third factor to consider.

What blockchain chain would you like the NFT to be on?

NFTs can be minted on various chains, depending on the preference of the creator. The most popular blockchain for NFTs is Ethereum, but over time, artists and NFT brands have moved to chains with lower fees and faster confirmations, such as Binance Smart Chain (BSC) and Solana.

When choosing a chain, you will also need to consider what wallet your gift recipient will store the NFTs in. NFTs on lesser-known chains sometimes don’t even have mobile wallet support, making the gifting process harder than it needs to be.

How to Gift an NFT Using Trust Wallet

Arguably, the easiest and most secure way to gift an NFT this Christmas is using Trust Wallet.

Let’s look at an example of how you can purchase a Sorare football collectible trading card on the leading NFT marketplace OpenSea and gift it to a football-loving family member, all using your Trust Wallet.

  1. Open your Trust Wallet and access OpenSea.io in your DApp Browser (if you have an Android phone) or using WalletConnect in your mobile browser (if you’re using an iPhone). Make sure you have ETH in your wallet since Sorare NFTs operate on the Ethereum blockchain.

  2. Search for ‘Sorare’ in the ‘Browse’ section of OpenSea.

  1. Pick the card your loved one would like. Make sure it’s a player or a club your gift recipient is a fan of.

  1. Click on ‘Buy Now’ and then ‘Check Out’.

  2. Complete the transaction by signing it with your Ethereum wallet.

  3. After your purchase, you will be able to view your NFT in the ‘Collectibles’ dashboard in your Trust Wallet.

  4. Show your gift recipient how to download Trust Wallet and ensure they back up their wallet by writing down and securely storing their recovery phrase.

  5. Ask them to open their Ethereum wallet to view their wallet’s QR code by clicking on the ‘Receive’ button.

  6. Scan the QR code and send them the Sorare NFT to their Ethereum wallet. Make sure to have enough ETH in your wallet to cover the gas fees.

  7. And voila! The gifted NFT will appear in your loved one’s wallet within minutes.

You can also use other cheaper gas options like Solana or BSC marketplaces they follow same practices as opensea, one of these you can visit on Solana is Solanart or Airnfts on BSC.

Finally, you can now take the time to explain how NFTs work, what they should know about keeping their wallet secure, and how they can sell their NFT should they want to in the future.
